Timbercorp investors hear insurance woes Mallins is in the process of buying the insurance assets of Timbercorp`s subsidiary, BI. The buyout will create nearly $5 billion in new capital for the company, which will be led by Mallins` family and some private capital. BI has $2 billion cash, and has assets totalling $17 billion in a portfolio of over 50 companies. However, Mallins and his team have been battling for the next couple of years with management of the company, an asset structure that the Mallins family has taken an interest in. The company`s new CEO, Steven Hollander, spent 18 months trying to get the company back on track, following its 2014 merger. His efforts were hampered by a series of bad investments in real estate. In August, Bank of America and JPMorgan bailed out a troubled bank called Citigroup. At the time, the banking and government sectors had combined for $25 trillion, and its management had been accused of keeping rates high to drive profits and improve its image. The sale of Timbercorp was also expected to bring on new management at the company and its insurance arm, BI. The bank was still struggling to turn around, so a sale was expected.
